About Us

Association of Surgeons of India, West Bengal State Chapter, has now more than thosand regular members. The members are mainly General Surgeons, Surgeons of Super Speciality and Post Graduate Stu­dents. The main objective of the Association is to foster friendship, co-opera­tion and exchange of knowledge and experience amongst the fraternity mem­bers. The members participate in the national programmes of the ASI. The State Chapter formulates and implements its own Scientific and Social Programmes in the State in pursuance and knowledge of the ASI Head Quarter.
Our State Chapter Office is on the 1 st floor of JIMA House at 53 Creek Row, Kolkata – 700 014. The office remains open on weekdays (Monday to Saturday) from 11.00AM. to 5.00 PM. We have at present two permanent office staff.

Executive Body of the Association is elected in the month of September for a term of two years. The Association has its own constitution with ap­proval of the ASI, Head Quarter. Meetings of the Executive Body are now held on 3rd Thursday of every month at 2.00 PM. in the Chapter’s Office. Different Sub-committees are formed with Chairmen, Convenors and Mem­bers for better delivery of ASI activities. At Burdwan ,Malda & Medinipur there are District Units. Burdwan Unit has a separate office room.
Monthly Clinical Meetings – The members assemble on the 25th day of every month (or the next working day if 25th is a holiday) at any Medical College or any private institution at 2.00 PM for the Clinical Meeting. Usually six to eight cases are presented by the surgeons of the Hospital concerned for discussion. Surgeons working in District or Subdivision Hospitals may also present cases in these meetings with prior intimation to the Convener of the meeting or Secretary of the Chapter.
Annual State Conference (SASICON) – Generally for 2 days held in the month of February at a venue outside Kolkata. Details of all the Conferences are compiled upto 17th SASICON in “MEMOIRS of ANNUAL CONFERENCES” written by Dr. A.K. Dutta Gupta.
Annual CME and Midterm.Conference (SASICME) is held in the month of September in any teaching institution usually at Kolkata. SASICME 2002 was held at Burdwan Medical College. SASICME 2005 was organized at Bankura Sammilani Medical College, Bankura.
Weekend CME Course – Now on every Friday and Saturday from 2.00 PM to 4.30 PM. for a period of more than five months (May to September) is organized at different institutions for the benefit of Post Graduate (M.S. & DNB) Students. A panel of teachers is made from senior & experienced surgeons as well as young teachers. At the end of the Course, the students registered for the course appear in an aptitude examination (Smt. Uma Rani Saha Memorial Medal Examination).For last few years in place of weekend CME courses 6days’Modular course – two such in a year are organized in the month of May and November.
Workshops- Seminars and Public Awareness Programme & speciality Clinics are organised at intervals at Kolkata and outside Kolkata in the District & Mofassil areas. Day before the SASICON or SASICME is usually fixed for a live operative workshop..
Orations – Seven Orations named after our stalwart illustrious predecessors and Guest Lectures are delivered during SASICON & SASICME by renowned Surgeons & Teachers from West Bengal as well as Guests invited from other places. Orations delivered at SASICON are three – i) Mr. L. M. Banerjee Oration (2) Dr. P. C. Sanyal Oration and (3) Dr. S. M. Ghosh Oration. Orations delivered during SASICME are four (1) Dr. Subodh Dutta Memorial Oration (2) Dr. R. B. Chatterjee Memorial Oration (3) DrA K sen Memorial Oration (4) Dr. Urmila and Dr. Anil Sen Sharma Memorial Oration.
Panel Discussions, Symposia, Short Scientific Papers, Poster Presentations and other scientific activities are also held during SASICONs & SASICMEs. Surgiquiz (Dr Bimalendu Mukherjee Memorial Surgiquiz)is a regular event during SASICME and sometimes during SASICON.

Every year our Chapter confers : Dr. K. K. Ghosh Memorial Medal for Best Short Scientific Paper presented during SASICON; Dr. A. K. Basu Travelling Fellowship conducted by ASI Head Quarter is endowed by the State Chapter; State Chapter itself offers Dr. R. B. Chatterji Travelling Fellowship to one of its members every year; Dr. Godrej Karai Travelling Fellowship is offered to one Post Graduate Student every year. In the name of the renowened teacher; every year one Research Fellowship is also offered in to a young
surgeon for research work his name Dr. Anungo Mohan Sen Memorial Medal is given to the candidate who stands first in M.S. Examination of Calcutta University; Smt. Anuka Banerjee Memorial Medal is given to the candidate who gets highest marks in Surgery in the Final M. B. B. S. Examination of Universities of West Bengal (Calcutta, Burdwan & North Bengal alternately). Gouri Sankar Medical is awarded to the lady student who gets highest marks in Surgery in Final MBBS Exam of Calcutta University. In previous years it was WASIWEBECH award doneted by Wives of Members of Association of Surgeons of India West Bengal Chapter. Nadia Award is given to the First Author of Best Publication in the Indexed Journal in the current year. For the appraisal of its members, the Association publishes the academic Programme Calendar at the beginning of the year and a News Bulletin of its own the ” SURGE” at regular intervals. The News Bulletin contains Scientific Articles, Information, Notices, and Appeals etc. General Body Meeting of the Association is held every year during SASICME. An Extraordinary G.B. Meeting is held every year during SASICON.
In the Chapter’s Office there is a small library with books and collection of Video Cassettes on different operations, a slide projector, an LCD projector and a TV set. Portraits of our illustrious predecessors are displayed on the wall of the Chapter’s Office
